I have determined the solution to the transparent saber issue. When applying the texture in gmax, select "metal" rather than phong, etc. When the alpha channel is applied to the .tga, it will shine instead of becoming transparent. Here is an example of a saber with and without a .txi

Since I lost my copy of the model files when my USB ate most of my project (which I have now recovered except for the models), I guess I'll be using yours unless anyone else can come up with something better.
